Becoming a school bus driver

To become a school bus driver you must be at least 18 years old and have a valid Class 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 licence, and not be a novice driver (see Endorsements). You must also pass a medical and school bus examination and obtain a valid school bus S Endorsement.

The minimum requirement to drive a school bus is a Class 5 licence. This allows you to drive a school bus with up to 15 passengers. If the school bus is equipped with air brakes, you must have the air brake Endorsement A specified on your licence.

School bus driver S Endorsement

If you successfully complete the school bus examinations, you will need to visit any SGI motor licence issuer to have the S Endorsement added to your driver's licence.

To retain your S Endorsement you must have a current satisfactory medical examination on file with SGI.

Your employer or a medical professional can initiate a re-test if they have any concerns.
