Studies show that seatbelt usage is significantly reduced in rural areas. The rural seatbelt challenge is a community-driven project designed to improve seatbelt use in Saskatchewan's rural communities.
To try and improve seatbelt use, for the past 5 years the seatbelt challenge was held. The challenge consisted of roadside surveys, conducted by community volunteers and our Traffic Safety Promotion department, measured seatbelt usage rates in each community participating in the challenge. The community with the highest percentage of positive change between surveys earned a cash prize to be used for local safety improvements.
