If you get notification that you're eligible, you can have the ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle. Then, you must buy an ignition interlock restricted driver's licence before you can drive your vehicle. The restricted driver's licence allows you to operate vehicles equipped with an ignition interlock device only.
Installing the ignition interlock device is as simple as following the steps below:
Step 1 - Once you have completed the required alcohol and drug education program, purchased your $75 reinstatement fee receipt and have served your absolute prohibition period for a Criminal Code conviction and the required suspension term for a roadside administrative licence suspension, SGI will send you a letter to inform you that you are eligible to install an ignition interlock device.
Note: If you have any outstanding suspensions on your driving record or overdue money owing to SGI, this will prevent you from getting an ignition interlock restricted licence.
Step 2 - In the letter you receive from SGI it will have contact information for our ignition interlock vendor, which is 1-844-432-4776. You must call this number to book an appointment to have the device installed. Please have your letter available during this call.
Step 3 - Since you will not have a valid driver’s licence you must have someone else drive your vehicle to the ignition interlock installation centre. When you go to get your ignition interlock device installed you must have someone drive you to the nearest SGI motor licence issuer to purchase an ignition interlock restricted driver's licence.
Step 4 - Once you purchase your ignition interlock restricted driver's licence at the motor licence issuer you will be able to drive any vehicle with an ignition interlock device installed. You must keep the device installed in your vehicle without any violations for the full amount of days required. If you remove the device you will be suspended indefinitely until you re-install the device and complete your term.
