Veteran Licence Plates
This official Saskatchewan licence plate to honour our veterans is a single plate that goes on the rear of the vehicle. Veteran plates are recognized by a V followed by 4 numbers.
While SGI doesn’t charge you for your veteran plate, there is a $5 application fee and regular registration fees and insurance premiums do still apply.
Note: If you have a veteran plate on the rear of your vehicle, you can’t display a different plate on the front of your vehicle, including a personalized plate.

How to apply
Before you can obtain veteran plates, your status as a veteran must be approved by the Royal Canadian Legion, Saskatchewan Command.
Follow the steps below:
- Obtain and complete a Veteran Plate Application form. Forms are available at Legion offices and SGI motor licence issuing offices across the province.
- Attach a photocopy of the following documentation to the application form:
- Retired Personnel - Canadian Forces discharge certificate/certificate of service (both sides) or equivalent for Merchant Navy, Allied forces, etc.
- Serving Personnel - Canadian Forces identification card plus personal service record information.
- Police Personnel - letter from the applicant’s police service confirming their involvement in a NATO operation or a United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping mission.
- Mail the completed form, along with photocopies of proof of service and the $5 application fee (cheque or money order payable to the Royal Canadian Legion, Saskatchewan Command) to the Royal Canadian Legion at the address listed at the top of the application form.
- For information concerning the status of your application, call the Royal Canadian Legion, Saskatchewan Command at 306-525-8739.
- Once the Legion receives the application, they will determine your eligibility and, if the application is approved, the Legion will forward it to SGI in Regina.
- SGI will assign the next veteran plate number and mail the plate to the motor licence issuing office designated by you on your application form.
- If you have more than 1 eligible vehicle registered or jointly registered in your name, and wish to order a veteran plate for each vehicle, you can do so by indicating the number of vehicles licensed in your name on the veteran plate application form.
- Once you have been approved for veteran plates by the Saskatchewan Command of the Royal Canadian Legion, SGI will keep a record of this. It will not be necessary for you to obtain approval from the Legion for subsequent veteran plate orders.
- When the veteran plate is ready for pick-up, SGI will advise you in writing. This should be within 10 days of your original application to the Royal Canadian Legion. You can then visit your motor licence issuer with your current licence plate and vehicle registration, and the issuer will process the transaction to replace your existing plate with your new veteran plate.
Souvenir veteran plates
If you’re a veteran who doesn’t own a vehicle but who wishes to obtain a veteran plate for display purposes, you can still apply for a veteran plate. You will receive a regular series veteran plate, even if you don’t plan to validate it.
Souvenir veteran plates are not available to the general public or to family members of veterans.
Note: A non-validated souvenir veteran plate cannot be displayed on the rear or front of a vehicle.
Special order veteran plates
If you wish to personalize your veteran plate, you must fill out a Personalized Licence Plate Application form along with your Veteran Plate Application form. Personalized licence plate options take approximately 6 to 8 weeks and administration fees apply.
