What visitors should know about auto injury insurance in Saskatchewan

Welcome to Saskatchewan. If you're a visitor, you should know how auto injury insurance applies to you whether you're a driver or a passenger of a vehicle in this province.

The provinces of Manitoba and Alberta have entered into reciprocal agreements with Saskatchewan to provide injury benefits to their own residents. If you're a Manitoba resident injured in a collision in Saskatchewan, Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) – a non-profit Manitoba Crown corporation that provides basic automobile coverage – will provide you with injury benefits. If you're an Alberta resident entitled to coverage through an Alberta insurer, the Alberta insurer will provide you with benefits. In these cases, Manitoba and Alberta residents must contact their own insurers.

If you're not from Manitoba or Alberta, Saskatchewan is a no fault province when it comes to auto injury insurance. Under Saskatchewan law, No Fault Coverage provides a comprehensive package of benefits that will cover the majority of your expenses, if you’re injured. If someone else is found responsible for the collision, No Fault Coverage allows you to sue for additional expenses. It doesn’t allow you to sue for pain and suffering, except in very limited circumstances.

As well, a non-Saskatchewan resident who’s responsible and has injured a Saskatchewan resident can be sued for economic and non-economic losses over and above the person’s package of benefits.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) is a provincial Crown corporation that administers No Fault Coverage as part of the Saskatchewan Auto Fund, the province's compulsory auto insurance program.
