Vehicle insurance coverage
Saskatchewan operates a mandatory vehicle registration and insurance program. When you buy your Saskatchewan licence plates, you also buy a basic package of insurance that includes:
- coverage for damage to your own vehicle subject to a deductible
- coverage for personal injury as a result of a vehicle crash with Personal Auto Injury Insurance
- liability insurance for damage your vehicle may cause to the vehicle or property of others or injuries it may cause to other people.
Extended insurance coverage
To lower your deductible and provide extra coverage, you can buy additional insurance for your vehicle, also known as a package policy or a SGI CANADA Auto Pak.
Liability insurance
Your licence plate insurance provides liability insurance of up to $200,000 per collision. Liability insurance covers the cost of damages you cause in a motor-vehicle collision, including:
- damage to the other driver’s vehicle
- damage to any property
- cost of medical expenses resulting from injuries to others
Consequences of a collision
When you’re at fault for a collision your safe driving record is affected. This may result in a financial penalty. See information on SGI’s Safe Driver Recognition program for full details.
You may also be fined by law enforcement for traffic convictions.
