Interview with Danny Greaves
SGI recently had a chat with former Watchmen lead
singer and current musical genius for SGI’s
drinking and driving commercial, Danny Greaves.
Here’s
what he had to say about the commercial, SGI
and life after Canadian rock stardom…
SGI – So how did your music get hooked
up with this commercial?
Danny – I composed this particular piece
of music awhile ago and I’ve been looking for a home for
it since then. When the director of the commercial contacted me,
this song immediately came to mind. It’s really nice that
it has found a home on the Prairies.
SGI – When you suggested the song were
there any objections?
Danny – I think they were originally looking
for a fast-paced, high-energy sound, but when they heard this sombre,
more uplifting sound it changed the direction of the commercial
and I think it actually worked better for what they were trying
to achieve. I think the music will move people and give the pictures
more meaning.
SGI – So have you been doing more commercial
work since The Watchmen disbanded a few years ago?
Danny – Ya, I have. And it’s been
surprisingly rewarding. I’m still working on some solo stuff,
but for the most part my commercial work for TV and film keeps
me very busy - that, and my wife and two kids.
SGI– Do you know much about SGI?
Danny – Well, being from Winnipeg I know
all about government-run auto insurance and I know they are very
active in getting out traffic safety messages. It’s very
important to me that my music is used in getting out very worthwhile
messages like this one.
SGI– How sick do you get of people asking
about a Watchmen reunion? Well, will there be one?
Danny – I never get sick of talking about
The Watchmen. I’m very proud of what we accomplished, but
I think we’ve all moved onto different projects and to different
stages of our lives. I’ll always keep singing and performing
for people because that’s very important to me.
