Fines/Penalties/Fees
In addition to drivers licence suspensions, screening, education and recovery programs, drinking and driving can also put a huge strain on your pocketbook. Some of those consequences in Saskatchewan include:
- Drinking and driving is certainly expensive. You will receive a minimum $600 court fine (with no maximum) in addition to a $500 penalty under Safe Driver Recognition. That’s $1,100 minimum – even if it’s the first time you are convicted.
- You will receive four demerit points under the Safe Driver Recognition program for the 30-day suspension if you are a new driver or the 24-hour suspension if you are an experienced driver. You will lose some of your vehicle licence plate insurance discount or be assessed a financial penalty.
- Drinking and driving could mean jail time.
- You will have a criminal record. This could prevent you from travelling outside of Canada.
- You will lose your driver’s licence for one to five years.
- You must pay for the education program. The DWI course costs $150.
