SGI Graduate Student Traffic Safety Research Scholarship - University of Regina
These grants are made available to selected graduate students whose proposed research involves engineering or human factor issues related to traffic safety.
The occurrence of traffic accidents is one of the undesirable by-products of any road transportation system. In Saskatchewan, the toll of these accidents to society is very high.
SGI plays an active role in efforts to reduce the number and severity of accidents in the province. The mandate of SGI’s traffic safety division is to develop and refine cost-effective traffic safety programs to reduce the number and severity of traffic accidents, appreciating that fatalities and injuries are a high traffic safety priority.
The main objectives for this grant are:
- To support development of ideas which may be applied to the solution of problems in traffic safety in Saskatchewan
- To develop expertise and interest in graduate students in the area of road safety
- To use the University of Regina expertise to broaden the scope of SGI’s traffic safety research by carrying out research in areas of interest to SGI
Criteria
The scholarship will be awarded to a University of Regina graduate student who meets the following criteria:
- proposed research involves engineering or human factors issues related to traffic safety
- accepted as a fully qualified graduate student
- minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 80%
- must be registered full-time (minimum 6 credit hours) in the semester the award is presented
- continuing students must be in good standing and have demonstrated satisfactory achievement in course work as well as appropriate progress toward the completion of the research requirement
- applications are invited from students in engineering and the social science areas but are not restricted to these areas
Value
The value of this grant is $5,000 per academic year.
Application process and deadline
Applications for the award are available on the University of Regina website and are to be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research by September 30.
Applications should include a proposal for carrying out the research along with an outline of relevant experience that would have a bearing on the project proposed. Applications must also be supported by a confidential letter of reference from the Faculty member who may be designated to supervise the student's research.
Selection process
The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research Scholarship Committee will review applications and select a recipient. The Manager of Graduate Scholarships and Awards, Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research shall notify in writing, the recipient and donor each year the scholarship is presented no later than November 30. The Manager of Graduate Scholarships and Awards will arrange payment to the recipient of the scholarship.
