Medicals for drivers with commercial licences
To get a commercial licence (classes 1, 2, 3 or 4 or endorsements 1, 2, 3, 4, G or S), you must submit a Commercial Driver’s Medical Report form before booking your written and road tests. The form is available online or at any SGI motor licence issuer.
Our Medical Review Unit (MRU) will review your medical report to ensure you meet the requirements for a commercial licence.
Maintaining your commercial licence
Once you have a commercial licence, you must provide periodic medical reports to maintain your commercial driving privileges. Medical reports are requested every:
- 5 years for drivers 18-45 years of age
- 3 years for drivers 46-65 years of age
- 1 year for drivers 66 years of age or older
How it works:
- We’ll send you a medical report form 4 months prior to the expiry of your driver’s licence.
- Return the form – completed and signed by your physician – to us within 2 months.
We do not pay for any portion of a commercial driver’s medical report. All medical information is treated as confidential as per The Health Information Protection Act.
Medical report results
Whether you can renew your commercial licence depends on your medical report:
- If we receive your report on time and you meet the requirements for a commercial licence, you can renew your commercial driver’s licence.
- If you don’t meet the requirements for a commercial licence, additional medical information may be required and your driver’s licence could be restricted, suspended or changed to a Class 5 licence.
If you don’t submit your report on time, your driver’s licence will be renewed as a Class 5 licence. If you’re unable to meet the deadline, contact the MRU as soon as possible to request a deadline extension.
Driver's licence class reduction
If you do not want to submit a medical to maintain your commercial driving privileges, you can voluntarily reduce your commercial licence to a Class 5 licence. Simply complete and return the Driver’s Licence Class Reduction form. There is no fee for this change.
After your licence is reduced to a Class 5, you can request reinstatement of your commercial licence at any time. Depending how long it has been since you had your commercial licence, the requirements are as follows:
- If it’s been less than 5 years – you must submit a medical report but you do not have to complete commercial testing.
- If it’s been more than 5 years – you must both submit a medical report and complete commercial testing.
