The transition to Graduated Driver’s Licensing on Sept. 1

Probationary drivers were converted into the Graduated Driver’s Licensing Program.

Learners in the program prior to Sept. 1 continue to be Learners. Their learning period will not be extended to nine months but will be credited and they will still be eligible to take a road test after six months. The new restrictions, however, apply to a learner. Once the learner takes the Class 5 test, the driver becomes a Graduated Driver’s Licensing Novice 1 driver.

Class 5 licence probationary drivers will be graduated to an experienced driver if they have held their licence for 18 months and the last 12 months are incident free. No probationary driver will be a Novice 1 even if they have less than six months as a probationary Class 5 driver.

Probationary drivers who have a commercial class of licence or a Class 5 licence with a commercial endorsement will be graduated.

All drivers in the Probationary Drivers Program received a letter from SGI informing them of their new standing in the Graduated Driver’s Licensing Program in August 2005.
