Driver Abstract

What is a driver abstract?

To insure your vehicle in another jurisdiction, you may be asked to provide proof of your driving history and proof of registered and insured vehicles in your name. Saskatchewan provides this information through a driver abstract, sometimes referred to in other jurisdictions as a Letter of Experience.
The fee for each abstract is $10. Payment is required with each request.

What information is included on my driver abstract?

Your driver abstract is made up of two records of information.

The Driver Record portion of the abstract is a complete record of your accidents or convictions. If you have had no accidents or convictions, your driver information area will indicate “NIL”.

The Plate Record portion is a record of any vehicles registered to you. Please note: if a vehicle is registered in joint names and one of the joint owners requires proof that the vehicle was registered and insured in Saskatchewan, it will be necessary to request a plate record under the joint name, in addition to the individual driver abstract.

How many years does a driver abstract cover?

Driver abstract information is issued for a minimum of five years of your driving and/or registration history. Customers may request an abstract for a longer period of time dating back to Jan. 1, 1995.

If you have not been a resident of Saskatchewan long enough to meet the five year minimum, the abstract will contain information equal to the time you were a Saskatchewan resident.

How do I obtain a driver abstract?

You can request a driver abstract one of three ways – by mail, in person or by fax. SGI requires a signed request indicating your full name, date of birth and your Saskatchewan driver’s licence number (if available). The request must also include your signature.

By Mail: If mailing your request, fill out the request form, enclose a cheque or money order payable to SGI and forward to:

Saskatchewan Government Insurance
Driver Abstracts
2260-11th Ave.
Regina, Sask.
S4P 2N7

Your abstract will be mailed to the address indicated on the form as soon as it is processed.

By Fax: If you prefer to fax your request, please fill out the request form and fax your request to 306-775-6681. Be sure to provide your VISA or MasterCard number including expiry date of your card on the form and remember to include your return fax number.

In Person: To request your abstract in person just visit any local Saskatchewan motor licence issuer.

How do I obtain a commercial driver abstract authorization?

The commercial driver abstract authorization form may be used by commercial carriers to request driver abstracts for one or more drivers they employ. All fields on the form must be completed as required. Commercial driver abstracts are issued for a minimum of five years, however, the option is available to request a longer period of time dating back to January 1995.

It is the responsibility of the carrier to ensure that drivers' information is protected. If any driver wishes to request their abstract individually, please submit an individual driver abstract request form.

Commercial driver abstracts may be obtained the same way as individual abstracts, by mail, fax or in person once the authorization form is completed as required.
