Driver’s licence classifications
Snowmobiles
The operator of a snowmobile is required to have a Class 1 to 5 driver’s licence to operate a snowmobile in any public area or on the travelled portion of a road (where a municipal bylaw exists allowing operation on a public road).
People who were born after Jan. 1, 1989 must have passed an approved snowmobile safety course in order to operate snowmobiles in public areas.
Note: A driver’s licence is not required to operate a snowmobile on privately owned land. Permission of the land owner, however is required.
Age restrictions
A person who is at least 16 years of age is allowed to operate a snowmobile in public areas except for the travelled portion of a road provided they have passed an approved snowmobile safety course. Direct crossing of a public road is permitted.
Someone who is at least 15 years of age and holds a Class 7 Learner’s licence is permitted to operate a snowmobile in public areas and on the travelled portion of a public highway (where permitted), provided they are accompanied by someone on the same machine, or supervised by someone on another machine who has held a valid Class 1 to 5 driver’s licence for the past 365 days.
Underage operators
Children between the ages of 12 and 15 are permitted to operate a snowmobile in public areas except the travelled portion of a public road, provided they have passed an approved snowmobile safety course and they are accompanied by someone on the same machine, or supervised by someone on another machine, who has held a valid class 1 to 5 driver’s licence for the past 365 days. Direct crossing of a private roadway is permitted.
All Terrain Vehicles (ATV)
A Class 1 to 5 driver’s licence is required to operate an ATV in any public area or on land that is not owned by the operator or a member of the operator’s immediate family (mother, father, sister, brother or child).
Underage operators
Children between 12 and 15 may operate an ATV in public areas provided they are accompanied or supervised by someone on another machine, who has held a valid Class 1 to 5 driver’s licence for the past 365 days or passed an approved ATV safety course.
Operation on the travelled portion of the road is not permitted except for the purpose of directly crossing the road.
