Driver’s licence classifications

To drive in Saskatchewan you must hold a valid driver’s licence for the type of vehicle you wish to operate.

Driver’s licence classes establish the minimum standards of skill, knowledge, physical fitness and mental fitness required for the safe operation of different types of vehicles. Drivers are then licensed accordingly.

An endorsement is an authority added to your driver's licence that permits you to operate a certain type of vehicle or equipment.

Driver’s licence restrictions

A driver’s licence restriction is a limiting condition put on an individual’s licence.

Restrictions are as follows:

1. Glasses or contact lenses - Must wear prescribed glasses or contact lenses.
2. May not drive at night - “Night” means the period commencing one-half hour after sunset and ending one-half hour before sunrise.
3. 40 km radius of address - May only drive within a 40 km radius of address shown on licence.
4. 80 km radius of address - May only drive within a 80 km radius of address shown on licence.
5. Outside city limits - May only drive outside the limits of a city or in a city as a learner.
6. Rear-view mirrors - Must have two outside rear-view mirrors on vehicle.
7. Custom Restriction - Must present Detail Authority Card.
8. Three-wheeled cycles - Motorcycles are limited to three-wheeled cycles, two-wheeled as a learner.
9. Cycles under 50 cc's - Motorcycles are limited to cycles under 50 cc's, larger as a learner.
10. School bus capacity - School bus capacity is limited to under 36 passengers.
11. No Class 2 or 4 vehicles - May not operate Class 2 or 4 vehicles.
12. Class 1 to 3 with automatic transmission - Class 1 to 3 vehicles are limited to automatic/electronic shift transmission, standard transmission as a learner.
13. School bus with automatic transmission - May only drive school bus with automatic transmission.
14. No taxi - May not drive a taxi for hire.
