Driver’s licence classifications
Class 7 – Learner driver’s licence

A Class 7 driver’s licence permits you to operate the following vehicles as a learner:
- cars, vans and 2 axle vehicles having a trailer or vehicle in tow where the gross weight of the towed vehicle does not exceed 4,600 kg
- buses when not transporting passengers
- 3-axle motorhomes
- taxis and ambulances when not used for hire
- 2-axle farm trucks towing any vehicle
- trucks with more than 2 axles registered in the farm vehicle class
- trucks with more than 2 axles registered in the farm class when towing vehicles where the weight of the towed vehicles does not exceed 4,600 kg
- vehicles registered in vehicle classes PB or PC when used exclusively for hire to transport no more than 24 passengers with a disability and any attendants to those passengers
Prerequisites
To apply for a Class 7 driver’s licence you must:
- be a minimum age of 16 with parental approval or 15 with parental approval when enrolled in a high school driver education program
- pass written or oral examinations on road signs and basic driving theory
- provide 2 pieces of acceptable ID to verify your full legal name, date of birth and signature
- The first piece of ID must be a birth certificate, passport or Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) document, which includes:
- Record of landing
- Permanent resident card
- Citizenship certificate
- Student authorization
- Employment authorization
- Visitor record
- The second piece of ID could be a Saskatchewan Health Card or another document accepted by SGI. Be sure to have several pieces of original identification with you (photocopies are not acceptable).
Driving supervisors
The driving supervisor must:
- at all times, be capable of assuming operation of the vehicle
- hold a minimum of a valid Class 5 driver’s licence
- have held a valid licence for a minimum of 365 days in the preceding 3 years
- occupy the seat nearest to the driver and the vehicle controls
- not be a novice driver
The licence of any 15-year-old driver who discontinues the High School Driver Education Program will be cancelled.
