Vehicle towing guidelines

If your motor vehicle needs towing, a professional towing service is recommended.

If you choose to tow a vehicle without the assistance of a professional towing service, there are certain guidelines to follow.

Depending on the method used to tow the vehicle, the vehicle being towed must be equipped with the following:

Towing a vehicle with a tow rope, chain or means other than a fixed attachment such as a tow bar or a fixed hitch towing device. Brakes, steering and lighting must be controlled by person in the towed vehicle.

Transporting a vehicle with its front or rear axle supported on the transporting vehicle and its electrical system functionally connected with the electrical system of the transporting vehicle.

  • a functional wheel securing device rated for the weight of the towed vehicle
Transporting a vehicle with its front or rear axle supported on a tow dolly and its electrical system functionally connected with the electrical system of the towing vehicle.

  • a steering system (if the steering axle is in contact with the road surface)
  • a brake system on the dolly (if the towed vehicle exceeds 2,000 kg or if the weight of the towed vehicle exceeds 40% of the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the towing vehicle, whichever is less)
Towing a vehicle with a tow bar or a fixed hitch towing device and its electrical system functionally connected with the electrical system of the transporting or towing vehicle.

  • brake system (if the weight of the towed vehicle exceeds 2000 kg or 40% of the GVWR of the towing vehicle, whichever is less)

If the vehicle being towed isn't equipped with the above lighting requirements, you must attach a light bar on the rear of the rearmost vehicle's auxiliary lighting that complies with brake, tail and signal lamp standards.

Note: The tow rope, chain, tow bar, fixed hitch or any other means of attachment must have a rating greater than or equal to the GVWR of the towed vehicle.
