Trailer Type Annual
Registration Fee
Perpetual
Registration Fee
Utility trailer $32 N/A
Semi trailer $32 $100
Transport trailer $32 $100

Perpetual TS plates are an optional 1 time commercial trailer registration for semi-trailers pulled behind power units, and can also be displayed on trailers that are part of an A or C train combination. Perpetual registration fees are valid for as long as the vehicle is owned. There is no insurance provided by perpetual fees, therefore insurance premiums are not collected.

Calculating your trailer fees

To calculate the cost of registering and insuring your trailer, follow the steps below:

  1. Determine the Class of your trailer (F, LV, T or TS).
For example, you have a tent trailer for camping, which is a Class T (private trailer).
  2. Determine the trailer type (utility, transport, tent, semi trailer, etc.), if required.
For example, your tent trailer is a Class T (private trailer) and is considered a tent type trailer.
  3. Find the applicable registration fee.
For example, your tent trailer is a Class T (private trailer) with a flat registration fee of $28.
  4. Find the insurance premium in the tables provided (determined by trailer type, value, or both trailer type and value).
For example, if your tent trailer is a Class T (private trailer) and is valued at $7,500, your insurance premium would be $149.
  5. If you are renting out your Class T trailer (U-Drive), add 30% to the insurance premium.
    For example, if your insurance premium is $149, you would add $45 ($149 x .30 = $44.70).
  6. Add your registration fee, insurance premium and U-Drive amount (if applicable) to get the cost of registering and insuring your trailer.
Sample trailer fee calculation
Registration fee + $28
Insurance premium + $149
U-Driver + $45
Total = $165

Note: Trailers in Class F and Class LT are eligible for several different payment options. Please discuss these payment options with your SGI motor licence issuer.

  1. Value must always be rounded up to the next thousand. For example, if the value of your trailer is $12,500, it must be rounded up to $13,000.back
