Driving rewards and penalties

We feel that safe drivers deserve to be recognized and risky drivers should be held responsible for their driving behaviours.

Our Safe Driver Recognition program rewards safe drivers with a discount on their basic vehicle insurance.

Drivers with at-fault collisions and more serious traffic convictions that put them in the Penalty Zone are assessed demerit points and a corresponding financial penalty for each incident they're involved in.

Who qualifies for a discount

  • If you own or lease a light vehicle registered in class LV, PV or F, you may be eligible to receive a discount on your vehicle insurance. The discount applies to every eligible vehicle you insure.
  • If you co-own a light vehicle registered in class LV, PV or F, you may be eligible to receive discounts on basic vehicle insurance. The discount for co-owners is based on the average safety rating of all co-owners.

Drivers new to Saskatchewan

As a new Saskatchewan resident, you may be eligible for a discount under the Safe Driver Recognition program. To see if you qualify for a discount, we must 1st determine your position on the Safety Rating Scale.

Determining your position on the scale

If you moved to Saskatchewan from another jurisdiction and you think you qualify for a discount, you must provide us with a claims experience report or claims history letter from your previous insurer.

If your claims history shows that you're claims-free, your safety rating will be adjusted to reflect your years of incident-free driving. If your claims history shows any at-fault collisions, you will move down the Safety Rating Scale, however, you won’t be assessed a financial penalty. If you don't provide a record of your claims history, you'll be placed on the rating scale based solely on your driving history, or at neutral if no history is available from your previous jurisdiction.

Submit your claims history to SGI by fax at 306-757-0197 or by mail to:
