Any vehicle can display a personalized licence plate, although some restrictions apply to veteran plates.

Specialty licence plates

The cost for a single personalized plate is $75 plus GST. To display a personalized plate on both the front and back of your vehicle, the cost is $95 plus GST. Please see the application form for a complete list of fees.

Eligibility

You can apply for a personalized plate if:

  1. You're the registered vehicle owner - If your vehicle isn't registered, we'll allow the plate to be ordered. However, before the plate can be displayed on your vehicle, it must be registered with SGI. Failure to properly display a licence plate on a registered vehicle is subject to a fine under The Traffic Safety Act. The licence plate is not valid until this is done.
    • Exceptions can be made for souvenir veteran plates.
  2. You'd like to give a personalized plate as a gift - The gift card will be delivered to the gift giver's address indicated on the application form.
    The gift card will either:
    • show the slogan you've selected for the vehicle owner; or
    • let the vehicle owner know they can select their own slogan.

Note: You can order a gift voucher for a Rider plate which can be redeemed in any person's name by calling 1-306-751-1232.

Slogan availability

You can check with your local motor licence issuer if the slogan is available or call our Customer Service Center at 1-800-667-9868. Unless the selection has been issued to someone else or deemed unacceptable, you should receive your personalized licence plates within 10 business days of SGI receiving your application.

Applications are reviewed and processed daily. If your slogan is unavailable, has been issued to another applicant or the selection can be viewed as unacceptable, you will be notified by phone or in writing and your payment returned. No payment is applied to a credit card unless a choice has been approved.

Slogan guidelines

Slogans that may be considered offensive, suggestive or not in good taste to the general public will not be approved. Licence plates are the property of the Crown and if SGI receives a complaint about a slogan the plate can be recalled.

You can have a maximum of 6 characters - numbers or letters - for all vehicles except motorcycles, snowmobiles which are limited to 5. Rider and Veteran plates are limited to 5 characters due to the graphics.

Slogans can't have any punctuation, except a space or a hyphen.

In addition, slogans can't have:

  • any combination of letters and numbers that conflict with the sequencing currently in use or planned to be used for the Saskatchewan vehicle registration system (for example: ABC 123, AB 123, 123 ABC, 123 AB)
  • any sequencing of V0000 to 0000V and W0000 to 0000W that are reserved for veteran plates
  • any sequencing of R0000 to 0000R and S0000 to 0000S that are reserved for regular issue Rider plates
  • less than 2, or more than 6 characters for all types of vehicles except motorcycles, snowmobiles or veteran plates
  • any symbols (for example: $ ! # ? @ %)
  • any combination of characters that may be considered offensive, suggestive or not in good taste

We can't approve slogans that imply:

  • sexual connotations/slang/advertising
  • drug/alcohol connotations
  • criminal connotations
  • general or derogatory slang
  • racial/ethnic slang
  • political connotations

After the slogan is approved, the manufacturer makes the plate and mails it to the address indicated on the application form. You should receive your personalized licence plate within 10 business days of SGI Head Office receiving your application.

Before the plates can be displayed on a vehicle, it must be registered with SGI. The licence plate is not valid until this is done. Failure to properly display a licence plate on a registered vehicle is subject to a fine under The Traffic Safety Act.
