24-hour and 8-day permits

These permits give you insurance coverage provided that the vehicle is driven in Saskatchewan. The 24-hour and 8-day permits are also recognized up to 17 km beyond the Saskatchewan-Alberta border and up to 16 km beyond the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border.

These permits can be used for any of the following scenarios:

  • on any empty motor vehicle (i.e., no commodities or permanently mounted equipment);
  • on any empty motor vehicle when towing an empty trailer (trailer must have its own permit or plate);
  • on a trailer or semi-trailer, either empty or with a load;
  • on a motor home of any weight when used for private purposes; or
  • on a motor vehicle transporting goods or permanently mounted equipment when operating at a combined weight (vehicle and load/s) of no more than 5,000 kg.

A 24 hour or 8-day permit cannot be used on:

  • a vehicle used for the transportation of passengers for compensation in a taxi or bus operation; or
  • a vehicle used for the transportation of more than 8 students to and from school.

In-transit permits

Seven-day in-transit permits are designed for inter-provincial use to transport a vehicle from a point inside Saskatchewan to a point outside of Saskatchewan. These permits are available from motor licence issuers and provide registration and insurance during the in-transit process.

They are issued primarily to non-residents needing to get their vehicles from Saskatchewan to their home province. Permit conditions and uses are restricted to ensure that it is recognized and accepted by other Canadian jurisdictions.

A 7-day in-transit permit can be used for the operation of:

  • an empty motor vehicle (i.e., no commodities or permanently mounted equipment);
  • an empty motor vehicle while towing an empty trailer;
  • a trailer or semi-trailer, either empty or loaded;
  • a motor home when transporting goods for private purposes; or
  • a motor vehicle transporting goods or permanently mounted equipment when operating at a gross vehicle weight of up to and including 5,000 kg.

The 7-day in-transit permit is valid for up to 7 days or when the vehicle reaches its destination, whichever comes first. The vehicle must travel without reasonable deviation between the point of origin and the destination, and it cannot stop during the trip in any one city, town, village or rural municipality for more than 24 hours.

The following vehicles are not eligible for a 7-day in-transit permit:

  • a vehicle used for the transportation of passengers for compensation in a taxi or bus operation; or
  • a vehicle used for the transportation of more than 8 students to and from school.

Cost of permits

24-hour - $20
8-day - $48
In-transit - $30
