It's convenient if you license seasonal vehicles, like motorhomes, motorcycles or grain trucks.
Cost of short-term registration
There is an administration fee of $11, plus a variable term fee, which is a percentage of your registration and insurance costs. The percentage depends on the length of term you choose - check with your motor licence issuer when signing up.
The example below is based on a 2002 Ford Taurus:
| Annual registration | Fee | 6-month term | Fee |
| Registration fee for 1 year | $68 | Registration fee for 6 months | $34 |
| Insurance premium for 1 year | $1,057 | Insurance premium for 6 months | $527 |
| Total paid for 1 year | $1,125 | Administration fee | $11 |
| Variable term fee (% of registration and insurance) | $9 | ||
| Total paid for 6-month term | $581 |
To sign up, visit any motor licence issuer near you.
Extending your term
If you decide to extend your registration term, you must extend it by a minimum of 28 days. For example, if you're a farmer and are concerned there may be a late harvest, you may want to choose an initial registration term for your grain truck that will cover that situation.
