The request should include:
- your plate number
- a brief vehicle description
- your signature
If there is a package policy on the vehicle, contact your insurance broker to have the policy cancelled.
If you have already registered the vehicle in another jurisdiction, you can provide a photocopy of the new registration and insurance and SGI may consider adjusting the cancellation date.
There is a retention fee of $20 when cancelling registration.
Send a cancellation request
The cancellation can be done at any motor licence issuer by the registered owner or any party with authorization from the registered owner, or by sending in a cancellation request to the following address.

Destroy the plates
You can either return your plates to the motor licence issuer or SGI to be destroyed, or destroy them yourself. The plates should be destroyed as they will continue to be associated with your name.
