An M endorsement on a Class 1 to 5 and 7 licence gives you authority to operate a motorcycle, provided you:

  • have held a Learner stage licence (Endorsement 6) for 365 days without interruptions
  • pass a complete in-traffic driving test on a motorcycle

Note: You will need to supply a motorcycle for your test.

Motorcycle restrictions

If you pass your motorcycle road test using a 3-wheeled motorcycle or a motorcycle under 50cc you will have the appropriate restriction1 displayed on your driver's licence and will only be permitted to operate a 2-wheeled motorcycle or larger motorcycle as a learner. If you would like to have the restriction removed, you must pass a road test in a 2-wheeled motorcycle which is 50cc or larger.

Novice 1 and Novice 2

Once the holder of a Learner stage licence has passed a road test, they graduate to Novice 1. The driver will then be required to remain incident free for 1 year in the Novice 1 stage before they are eligible to graduate to the Novice 2 stage. After the driver completes an additional year of incident-free driving in the Novice 2 stage, they will graduate to a full and unrestricted M motorcycle licence.
