SGI will provide a refund for the unused paid portion of a cancelled driver's licence. Refunds are calculated on a monthly prorated basis and will be mailed to the last Saskatchewan address on file unless otherwise advised.
Cancellation of the driver's licence is subject to a $10 administration fee. Depending on the expiry date of the driver licence, there may be no refund due.
All refunds of driver's licence fees will be netted against any money owed to SGI on file. No refund will be issued for an amount less than $5 and this amount will appear on the customer's file as a credit on account.
Voluntary cancellation
If a driver no longer wishes to drive, a signed letter requesting that the driver's licence be cancelled must be mailed, faxed, or provided to any motor licence issuer. The letter can be faxed to 306-569-9631 or mailed to:

SGI will provide a refund for the unused paid portion of a cancelled driver's licence. Refunds are calculated on a monthly prorated basis and will be mailed to the last Saskatchewan address on file unless a forwarding address is indicated on the cancellation request.
A copy of a Power of Attorney document must be submitted if the driver is not able to make their request for cancellation on their own.
Non-driver photo ID
A photo ID card is available for all Saskatchewan non-drivers. The cost is $10 or free if you're 65 or older. For more details, check out the Non-driver photo ID page.
Driver is deceased
For the driver's licence to be cancelled as a result of an individual passing, a signed letter must be mailed, faxed, or provided to any motor licence issuer requesting the cancellation. The letter should include 1 of the following documents along with an address to provide a refund:
The acceptable proof documents to cancel a driver's licence are:
- a death certificate
- funerary certificate (issued by a funeral home)
- a letter from a lawyer
- a signed letter from the executor/executrix of the estate along with a copy of the death certificate or funerary certificate
In the event of a refund, SGI will mail a cheque payable to “The Estate of ...” to the last mailing address on file or to the forwarding address if 1 was provided.
Driver moved out of province
When a driver moves out of province and obtains a driver's licence in another Canadian jurisdiction, that jurisdiction will inform SGI of the exchange. The Saskatchewan driver's licence will be automatically cancelled. Refunds are calculated on a monthly prorated basis and will be mailed to the last Saskatchewan address on file unless otherwise advised.
If a driver has moved out of country, the driver's licence will be manually cancelled only if SGI has received notification from the customer or from the jurisdiction they have moved to.
Note: Not all jurisdictions will notify SGI if a driver has exchanged their licence or received a new driver's licence.
A signed letter must be mailed, faxed, or provided to any motor licence issuer requesting the cancellation. The driver will need to provide the effective date of the new licence, which will be the cancellation date of the Saskatchewan driver's licence. Refunds will be mailed to the last Saskatchewan address on file unless a forwarding address has been indicated on the cancellation notification from the customer.
