Trailer and towing guidelines

Registration fees are based on the class and type of trailer.

Legislation requires a person to hold a Class 1 driver's licence if you are towing trailers or vehicles where the combined gross weight of the trailer and it's contents exceeds 4,600 kg.

Registration fees are based on the class and type of trailer. Trailer owners have the option of registering their trailer with an annual fee, or a perpetual fee.

The insurance premiums for trailers are based on either the value declared for the trailer at time of registration, the type of trailer, or both.

Farm - Class F

Trailer Type Annual or Perpetual
Registration Fee
Premium Rate
Utility Trailer $32 $22
Semi Trailer $32 $95
Transport Trailer $32 $30

Perpetual registration fees are valid for as long as the vehicle is owned. There is no insurance provided by perpetual fees, therefore insurance premiums are not collected.

Commercial trailer - Class TS

Trailer Type Annual
Registration Fee
Perpetual
Registration Fee
Utility Trailer $32 N/A
Semi Trailer $32 $100
Transport Trailer $32 $100

Perpetual TS plates are an optional 1 time commercial trailer registration for semi-trailers pulled behind power units, and can also be displayed on trailers that are part of an A or C train combination. Perpetual registration fees are valid for as long as the vehicle is owned. There is no insurance provided by perpetual fees, therefore insurance premiums are not collected.
