New SGI licence issuer in Stony Rapids
Sept. 30, 2011
Getting a driver’s licence or photo ID card is now easier for northern Saskatchewan residents with the appointment of SGI’s newest motor licence issuer.
Minister responsible for SGI Tim McMillan congratulates Scott Hale of Scott's General Store in Stony Rapids on becoming SGI's newest motor licence issuer, giving northern residents easier access to driver's licensing and vehicle registration services.
On Sept. 29, 2011, Scott’s General Store in Stony Rapids joined SGI’s network of more than 400 motor licence issuers across the province.
“Having a motor licence issuer right in Stony Rapids benefits the residents there as well as the surrounding communities,” said Hon. Tim McMillan, Minister Responsible for SGI. “The ability to visit a local issuer in person helps ensure our northern customers get the identification they need for driving, air travel in Canada and voting.”
In addition to licensing services, the Stony Rapids issuer offers vehicle registration services. Previously, the closest licence issuer was more than 650 kilometres away in La Ronge.
“We’re happy to add licence issuing to the services we provide to our customers in Saskatchewan’s far north,” said Scott Hale, owner of Scott’s General Store. “We know it’s something our customers have been wanting and it will certainly be more convenient for them.”
The exemption for people living in remote northern locations from requiring a photo on their driver's licence expires Dec. 31, 2011. In May 2011, SGI visited the communities of Wollaston Lake, Black Lake, Fond du Lac, Stony Rapids and Uranium City to provide photo ID and other driver licensing services to residents there. Another visit is planned for October 2011.
