Crowns donate hockey tickets to foster children
December 11, 2009
Saskatchewan foster children will be cheering on the teams at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Regina and Saskatoon later this month, thanks to five of Saskatchewan's Crown corporations.
CIC, SGI, SaskTel, SaskPower and SaskEnergy are major sponsors of the tournament and donated their tickets to the Saskatchewan Foster Families Association (SFFA) to distribute the tickets to 27 games to foster families in the province. More than 400 tickets are available to the foster families for games in both Regina and Saskatoon.
"It's the holiday season and in the spirit of giving, we offered tickets to this world-class hockey tournament to Saskatchewan foster families, who may never get the opportunity to attend an event like this," Minister responsible for Crown Investments Corporation June Draude said. "Foster parents open their hearts and their homes to vulnerable children and youth in need, so this a small way to give something back to them and to treat the children. They can cheer on team Canada and see talented young hockey players from all over the world."
The SFFA is making the tickets available on a first-come, first-served basis to foster families and so far the reaction is excellent. Currently, there are over 700 foster families providing care to children and youth in Saskatchewan.
"We were thrilled to hear about this generous offer from the government of Saskatchewan," SFFA Executive Director Deb Davies said. "The anticipation is building as our foster families are very excited about going to the games. I can't tell you how much they appreciate this opportunity."
Saskatchewan's Crown corporations are committed to being good corporate citizens. Every year they support arts, culture, sport and community events throughout the province such as the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.
